Ann Stewart, World-Famous Kiltmaker

About Us

Welcome to Ann Stewart, Kiltmaker! Ann Stewart is known the world over as a Master and Historian of the Kilt & Tartan. All of our kilts are hand sewn, and constructed from the finest fabrics.

Ann Stewart has been making kilts for over 50 years. She began as an apprentice to a tailor in Elgin, Scotland at the age of 15.

"I think I wanted to sew like my grandmother ever since I was born. Before I was allowed to sew my first buttonhole on a mans fly, I did 130 practice buttonholes in scrap fabric. I have been handmaking kilts for over 50 years now. I have been sewing since I was 5 years old and will be sewing when I am 90."

Ann Stewart is known the world over as a Master and Historian of the Kilt and Tartan. She is also an author, having written articles on kilts and kilt skirts in the February/March issue of Threads magazine. She is also the author of Folkwear's Scottish Kilt Pattern #152.

Ann is from Burghead in Morayshire, Scotland, a small fishing village that was a great pictish fort dating back to 800BC. "I just did my family genealogy chart dating back to 1865 and most of the families came from the three neighboring towns - except for my grandfather - and I am still working on that."

All of Ann's kilts take about 10 hours to make because "All of our kilts are hand sewn." Ann Stewart is a member of the Tartan Cultural Education Authority, and the New York Caledonian Club and Clan Murray Society.
